We are visiting Vietnam and will spend a few days in Hanoi. We are probably going to Halong bay but not sure how we can get there. Could we book the cruise through the hotel where we re staying or we can do directly on spot in Halong ?

You should book Halong trip in advance with a travel agent or the hotel where you stay. The trip would include the transfer to Halong and back.
