Bus ride from Udon Thani to Vientiane

We are going to  Laos next year. Our flight will be landing in Udon Thani (Thailand) around 6pm. My question is that we can get a bus to Vientiane the same evening? Can we then get the visa upon arrival at the Laos/Thai border?

If your flight lands in Udon Thani at around 6pm , there is  no bus at that time.
You have to spend one night here and take the bus on the next day.
